The Stars used their first-round pick in the NHL draft, 25th overall, on C Steve Ott. The 5-11 1/2, 160-pound center is considered a pest along the lines of Esa Tikkanen or Tyson Nash of the St. Louis Blues after totaling 131 penalty minutes to go with 23 goals and 39 assists in 66 games with Windsor of the OHL. It was Dallas' first first-round choice in three years. ... The Stars lost D Jamie Pushor and LW Sergei Luchinkin in the expansion draft, with both players going to the Columbus Blue Jackets. On June 12, only two days after losing in the Stanley Cup Finals, Dallas traded G Manny Fernandez and D Brad Lukowich to the expansion Minnesota Wild. The Stars re-acquired Lukowich less than two weeks later for Cs Aaron Gavey and Pavel Patera and a swap of four draft picks. ... Dallas will not re-sign D Shawn Chambers and C Brian Skrudland, allowing them to become unrestricted free agents. Ds Sylvain Cote and Dave Manson also are expected to test free agency. ... 40-year-old C Guy Carbonneau was a finalist for the Bill Masterton Trophy for perseverance and dedication. |
