The Sharks wasted no time dipping into the free agent market, signing LW-C Scott Thornton away from the Dallas Stars on July 1. Thornton, 29, inked a four-year contract worth a reported $4 million. He split last season between Montreal and Dallas, combining for eight goals and six assists in 65 games, then adding two goals and seven assists in 23 playoff games. "Thornton's versatility, combined with his skill and toughness is a valuable commodity up front," said GM Dean Lombardi. "He fills a need and can play center and lots of minutes." ... San Jose lost no one off its NHL roster in the expansion draft as the Minnesota Wild claimed D Chris Armstrong and C Michal Bros. ... C Mike Ricci was a finalist for the Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward, while D Brad Stuart was a finalist for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. ... For the first time in team history, the Sharks did not have a pick in the first round of the NHL draft. With their first choice, 41st overall, they took Finnish D Tero Maatta.
