The Senators are looking forward to C Alexei Yashin's return to the team after an arbitrator ruled June 28 he remains under contract to Ottawa for another year. "Alexei is a great hockey player and a fine young man," owner Rod Bryden said. "The Senators team performed well last season under difficult circumstances, and we are confident that with Alexei's return the team will reward the fans and the community with an outstanding season of hockey." GM Marshall Johnson described the ruling as "very good news for our club," calling Yashin "a key part of our team." "The Senators' fans have shown themselves to be highly knowledgeable, loyal and patient. We are asking our fans to join with the team in welcoming Alexei back," Johnston continued. ... Ottawa used its first-round pick in the NHL draft, 21st overall, on D Anton Volchenkov. The 6-foot, 209-pound Russian was the 10th-ranked European prospect and became the first defenseman taken by the Sens in the opening round since Chris Phillips in 1996. ... Ottawa lost C-LW Joe Juneau and RW Kevin Dineen in the expansion draft. Juneau was taken by the Minnesota Wild, who traded him to Phoenix, while Dineen went to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
