The Sabres gambled with their first-round pick in the NHL draft, taking C Artem Kriukov with the 15th overall selection. The 6-3, 180-pound Russian has been plagued by multiple concussions. In Novmeber, he suffered a concussion and began convulsing on the ice, and trainers used a stick blade to prevent him from swallowing his tongue. He did not play again for four months. "I was at the game it happened," said Don Luce, the Sabres director of player personnel. "It looked bad, but it was just a concussion. He got a little hurt and played the rest of the season after coming back with no problems. It was mild. ... We looked into it. We're fine with it." Added GM Darcy Regier, "Everybody is satisfied with him being back 100 percent. As much as there should be a concern, it's also something that you don't want to overreact to, too. It needs to be examined, which it was, and then you move on." ... By taking Kriukov, the Sabres bypassed Amherst, New York native D Brooks Orpik, who went to Pittsburgh at No. 18. ... Buffalo lost G Dwayne Roloson and LW Geoff Sanderson in the expansion draft, with both going to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Sabres traded D Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre and RW Matt Davidson to the Blue Jackets to make sure Roloson and Sanderson were taken. |
