It's been a busy offseason for the Oilers, who lost longtime GM Glen Sather, replaced him with former coach Kevin Lowe and named Craig MacTavish as Lowe's successor. Sather ended his quarter-century association with Edmonton on May 19 and later took the GM job with the New York Rangers. Lowe moved upstairs on June 9, 13 days before MacTavish was promoted from assistant coach. ... One of Lowe's first moves was trading former All-Star D Roman Hamrlik to the New York Islanders on June 24 for LW Josh Green, D Eric Brewer and a second-round draft pick. ... Lowe also used the Oilers' first-round pick in this year's draft -- 17th overall -- on Russian winger Alexei Mikhnov, whose stock dropped from midseason. "I'm a forward and I think that I can play very well 1-on-1," he said through an interpreter. "I think I have good passing skills, and I think I can score a few goals, too." ... The Oilers lost D Bert Robertsson and C Jim Dowd in the expansion draft. Robertsson was claimed by the Columbus Blue Jackets, while Dowd rejoined former Devils coach Jacques Lemaire with the Minnesota Wild. |
