The Maple Leafs used their first-round pick in the NHL draft, 24th overall, on C Brad Boyes. The 6-foot, 181-pound native of nearby Mississauga was voted the top playmaker, smartest player and best stickhandler in the Western Conference in a poll of OHL coaches. "Right now, I can still hardly believe it," he said. "I've been following the Leafs since I was younger. I was surrounded by huge Leafs' fans, parents, all of my friends. Like I said, it's still hard to believe." Boyes was the first North American forward taken by the Leafs in the first round since Landon Wilson in 1993. ... Toronto took a hit in the expansion draft, losing C Kevyn Adams to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Columbus also plucked D Tommi Rajamaki from the Maple Leafs' roster. ... An emotional LW Wendel Clark announced his retirement on June 29. The six-time 30-goal scorer began and ended his career with the Leafs, who took him with the top overall pick in the 1985 draft. He finished with 330 goals, 234 assists and 1,690 penalty minutes in 793 NHL games. "No matter what number of teams he played for, Wendel is a Leaf, a great Leaf," Toronto president Ken Dryden said. "Some players are measured by the numbers next to his name. For Wendel Clark, it is the affection the city of Toronto and Leafs fans everywhere hold for him." ...
