The Flames traded center Dan Cavanaugh and an eighth-round draft pick to the expansion Minnesota Wild for veteran G Mike Vernon. A Calgary native, Vernon spent his first 11 seasons with the Flames and won a Stanley Cup in 1989. The following day, Calgary used the ninth pick in the NHL draft on G Brent Krahn, who played junior hockey for the Calgary Hitmen. Last season, he was 33-6-0 with a 2.38 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage. "I didn't really get any indication of where I would be going, but I had a gut feeling it would be with the Flames," Krahn said. "It is unbelievable to be playing here, whether I'm with the Flames or the Hitmen." ... On June 6, Calgary hired Dallas Stars executive Craig Button to succeed Al Coates as general manager. Button spent 12 seasons with Dallas. He was a scout for six years before taking over as director of player personnel in 1998. ... The Flames lost D Filip Kuba and RW Sergei Krivokrasov in the expansion draft, with both players going to the Minnesota Wild and former Calgary GM Doug Risebrough. |
