The Coyotes' franchise got some star power, albeit off the ice, when Wayne Gretzky was introduced as part of the new ownership group on June 2. The "Great One" will be the team's director of hockey operations under owner Steve Ellman. "I want it to be perfectly clear that I am a partner," Gretzky said. "I'm not going to be coaching, I'm not going to be general manager and I'm not going to be involved day-to-day." ... Phoenix used its first-round pick in the NHL draft, 19th overall, on C Krys Kolanos, who recorded a pair of hat tricks while helping Boston College reach the NCAA championship game. As for joining an organization that includes Gretzky in the front office, Kolanos said, "Oh, it's unbelievable. It's the `Great One.' Him being part of the organization, I couldn't ask for anything more." ... Phoenix acquired veteran C-LW Joe Juneau from the expansion Minnesota Wild for 20-year-old Swedish C Rickard Wallin. The Coyotes lost D Lyle Odelein and RW Dallas Drake to the Columbus Blue Jackets in the expansion draft. Drake later signed as a free agent with St. Louis. |
