The Avalanche made a splash at the NHL draft, dealing D Sandis Ozolinsh and a second-round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes for D Nolan Pratt and the 14th overall pick. Colorado used it to select C Vaclav Nedorost, a 6-1, 187-pound Czech who was the sixth-ranked European prospect. He had eight goals and six assists in 41 games in the Czech senior league but was used in a largely defensive role at the 2000 World Junior Championships. Ozolinsh became expendable after the Avs re-signed five-time Norris Trophy winner Ray Bourque. "We made the acquisition of key draft picks, which will hopefully turn into impact players for the future of our franchise," GM Pierre Lacroix said. "Moreover, Nolan Pratt will add a physical presence to our defensive corps at the age of only 24." ... Colorado lost G Rick Tabaracci and RW Jeff Odgers in the expansion draft. Tabaracci, who played only two games for the Avs last season, was claimed by the Columbus Blue Jackets, while Odgers went to the Minnesota Wild. ... On June 7, Colorado traded G Marc Denis to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a second-round pick that was sent on to Carolina in the Ozolinsh deal. |
